Maria works through thin veils of paint to emotionally coerce a response from within. Each layer begs the question, which moments to expose and which to conceal.

The starting point for her paintings are photographs she has taken, then manipulated, de-cluttering and reducing the images to the bare necessities so that she can focus solely on the forms she finds relevant. Having always been fascinated by positive and negative imagery, her work displays the interchanging highlights between the image and the space surrounding it. Using monochromatic shades reinforces the effect, allowing the lines defining the forms to question their boundaries, wrestling each other in various shades of light and dark so there is always a sense of ambiguity with subtlety key.
